From NYC through New England. Heading North to Quebec and then all the way to the Pacific. Southbound through California, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras to Costa Rica. The first part of our world trip takes 13 month.
Feb 1997 we start in Brooklyn. We find our Van after 4 weeks. Our friend Donna gives us home and shelter for 3 month.
Katja works as a receptionist renting camera equipment and we both enjoy the East Village Nights. What happens in EV, stays in EV.
Leaving New York and heading to the cold North. Williamstown, MA is the first place. We meet Jacqueline, a friend from Cologne.
The Acadia NP is a first highlight of nature. We have ice on the inside in our van, our breath is frozen in the morning.
Snow and ice on the road, streets are damaged. Lots of Moose we do see every day now.
It is still cold at night and we sleep in a B&B for one night to get a warm shower.
Arriving in the french province. Quebec is having this European touch. A surprise for us.
The van needs a repair, a verbal fight and I backed up at night. There was a telegraf-pole behind the car. Montreal underground City gives us shelter from the cold.
Ottawa, half french and half British. We need to start looking for a job soon.

Van Life, it is so much fun, we really enjoy it. Shaving outdoors and cooking indoors.
We find a job! Planting Tobacco in South Western Ontario. We never heard about this before – for a reason. This is damn hard work.
Every mistake Guido does, Katja has to correct it manually. From dusk till dawn for 6 weeks.

Heading North to Michigan. We arrive in St. Ignace meeting old friends of Katjas parents.We have jobs as Busser and Dishwasher and get to know a lot of nice colleagues.
The bridge connecting Upper and Lower peninsula is a gigantic piece of architecture.Party on a cruise under the bridge. A beautiful summer on the Lakes.
